Orange Cookies

Orange Cookies are soft, lightly spiced drop cookies featuring fresh orange juice and zest in both dough and glaze. The dough is creamed with shortening, sugar, and eggs, then balanced with baking soda, baking powder, and buttermilk for tender texture. A vibrant orange glaze adds an additional bright citrus layer after baking, creating a moist, flavorful treat.

Description

These Orange Cookies start with creaming shortening, sugar, and eggs until fluffy, which provides a tender crumb. Sifted dry ingredients including flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt are alternated with buttermilk to maintain softness. Fresh orange juice and zest incorporated into the dough lend brightness and aroma.

Dropped by spoonfuls onto a greased sheet, the cookies bake quickly at 350°F until set, resulting in a soft-centered cookie with lightly crisp edges. While warm, the cookies are glazed with a mixture of powdered sugar, fresh orange juice, and zest, which dries to a shiny, flavorful coating.

This treat is ideal for those who enjoy citrus-flavored baked goods with a mildly spiced, tender texture and a sweet finish.
