Orange White Chocolate Chip Cookies
Description
This cookie recipe blends softened butter with brown and white sugars, then incorporates fresh orange zest and juice to infuse each cookie with citrus brightness. The dry ingredients of flour, baking soda, and salt are folded in carefully to avoid excess gluten development, preserving a tender crumb. White chocolate chips are stirred throughout the dough and some are placed on the cookie tops after baking for added texture and sweetness.
Baking at 385 degrees for 8-9 minutes yields cookies with lightly golden edges and soft centers. The dough's orange components create a subtle tang that complements the creamy sweetness of white chocolate. Optional orange extract and food coloring can intensify flavor and color without overpowering.
These cookies work well as a dessert or an afternoon treat, with the citrus notes providing a refreshing nuance amid sweetness. Their moderate size and soft texture make them easy to portion and share.
Pressing the edges inward or gently shaping with a glass during baking helps maintain round shapes if the dough spreads excessively. Adding more zest can increase the orange highlight for more pronounced flavor.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup butter (softened)
- 3/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 Tablespoon orange zest
- 1 Tablespoon orange juice
- 1 1/2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/4 cups white chocolate chips
- Food Coloring optional, orange
- 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon orange extract (optional)
Instructions
- Heat oven to 385 degrees. In a large mixing bowl, cream together butter, brown sugar, and sugar for 4 minutes, or until light and fluffy.
- Add egg, orange zest, and orange juice for 1 minute longer. If you are adding orange extract or orange food coloring, add it to the dough now.
- Fold in flour, baking soda, and salt. Don't overmix once you add the dry ingredients or it will produce too much gluten in the dough. Fold in 1 cup of white chocolate chips, reserving 1/4 cup for topping the cookies once you remove them from the oven.
- Scoop the dough onto parchment paper lined, light-colored baking sheets, spaced at least two inches apart. Bake for 8-9 minutes. DO NOT overbake the cookies as they will continue to bake once they are removed from the oven.
- For more gourmet cookies, place several white chocolate chips on top of the cookies, once you remove them from the oven. Let set up on a baking sheet for 3-4 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack.
Notes
- Adding extra orange zest can enhance the citrus flavor of the cookies.
- If cookies spread too much during baking, gently reshape them into circles using a spatula or press the edges toward the center.
- Using a glass to shape the cookies while warm can help maintain a perfect round form.
