Oreo Balls

Oreo Balls combine crushed Oreo cookies with softened cream cheese and vanilla extract to create a sweet, creamy mixture shaped into bite-sized balls. These are chilled briefly and then coated in melted white chocolate, resulting in a rich, creamy, crunchy treat. The contrast between the smooth cream cheese interior and the crisp white chocolate coating provides a satisfying texture and sweet flavor.

Description

This recipe unites crushed Oreo cookie crumbs with softened cream cheese, infused with vanilla extract for a smooth, tangy base. Using a food processor ensures the cookies break down finely for an even blend, but manual crushing is an alternative when necessary. The mixture is shaped into uniform 1-inch balls and chilled to help them firm up before being dipped into melted white chocolate.

The white chocolate coating adds a sweet, creamy shell that sets firmly, contrasting with the soft, velvety interior. Chilling the balls prior to dipping helps them maintain shape. Reserving some cookie crumbs for topping provides an added decorative crunch after dipping.

These Oreo balls are ideal as handheld desserts or snacks at parties or gatherings. They store well in the freezer before or after coating, allowing advance preparation.

When lacking a food processor, crush Oreos inside a sealed plastic bag using a rolling pin or bottle. Cream cheese can be whipped by hand or an electric mixer before combining ingredients. Follow package directions carefully when melting chocolate, with a double boiler method recommended for even melting.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 8 oz cream cheese (softened to room temperature)
  • 36 Oreo cookies
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract pure
  • 16 oz white chocolate melting wafers (Ghirardelli is my favorite)

Instructions

  1. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. For easy blending, first allow cream cheese to soften to room temperature.
  3. Add oreos to a medium/large food processor and pulse cookies into fine crumbs. (See notes for alternate method if needed)
  4. Reserve 2 tablespoons of cookie crumbs for topping.
  5. Next add cream cheese and vanilla extract and process until well blended, scraping down the sides as needed.
  6. Roll and shape mixture into 1-inch balls.
  7. Place on lined cookie sheet and freeze for 10-15 minutes.
  8. Next melt the wafers. Use package instructions for melting, using the double broiler method for best results, if possible. To make a DIY double broiler, fill a medium-small pot 1/2-3/4 full with water and place a medium-large heat-safe glass/pyrex bowl top. Bring water to an active/rolling simmer (reduce heat as needed to prevent it from spilling over) and use empty bowl on top to melt chocoalte, stirring often until perfectly melted. Remove from heat.
  9. Retrieve oreo balls from freezer and set the tray besides the melted chocolate. Place each ball on a fork and spoon chocoalte over the ball to coat, pouring off any excess.
  10. Use an additonal fork, spoon, or toothpick to transfer to your parchment paper lined baking sheet. Sprinkle with reserved oreo crumbles while hot and repeat for remaining balls.
  11. For same-day enjoyment, allow to sit for an hour in the refrigerator to set before serving. Once set, store in an air tight container in the fridge or you can even freeze some for later!

Notes

  • If no food processor is available, place Oreos in a sealed bag and crush with a rolling pin until finely ground.
  • Softening cream cheese to room temperature eases blending and ensures smooth texture.
  • Whip cream cheese separately with a mixer or by hand for a lighter mixture before adding cookie crumbs.
  • Reserve some cookie crumbs to sprinkle on top of the coated balls for extra texture and presentation.
  • Use a double boiler method to melt white chocolate evenly without scorching.
  • Freeze formed balls before dipping to help maintain shape during coating.
  • Nutrition estimates depend on batch size; adjust based on how many balls are made.
