Oreo Frosting
Description
This frosting starts by whisking flour into milk and heating it gently until the mixture thickens to a paste-like consistency, then cooling to room temperature. This thickened base stabilizes the frosting and prevents it from being runny. Once cooled, it is combined with creamed butter, granulated sugar, and a pinch of salt, all beaten until light and fluffy over several minutes.
Vanilla extract adds flavor, and then crushed Oreo cookie crumbs, including both cookie and cream, are folded in to introduce texture and chocolate notes. The frosting is versatile enough to frost cakes or cupcakes, with finer crumbs recommended when piping to avoid clogging tips.
Allowing the thickened milk base to cool completely before mixing with butter is key to achieving the right texture. The mixture also benefits from thorough beating to reach a whipped cream-like smoothness.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ cups milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 ½ cups butter at cool room temperature, salted
- 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
- Pinch salt
- 10 Oreo cookies cookie and filling crushed to fine crumbs**
Instructions
- In a small saucepan, whisk flour into milk and heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens. It will be the consistency of a thick paste.*
- Remove from heat, and let it cool to room temperature. This step is key. If the milk mixture is at all warm, it won't come together properly.
- Stir in vanilla.
- Once the mixture is cool, cream the butter, sugar, and salt together until light and fluffy on medium-high, about 5 minutes.
- Then add the completely cooled milk mixture.
- Beat it for about 5 minutes on medium-high to high until it looks like whipped cream. It may look separated at first, so keep beating it until it comes together and looks like whipped cream.
- Fold in cookie crumbs.
- Frost cake or cupcakes of your choice.
Notes
- The thickened flour and milk mixture should cool completely before adding to ensure proper frosting consistency.
- For piping, crush Oreo cookies into fine crumbs to prevent clogging piping tips; larger pieces work fine for spreading.
- The flour mixture thickens further as it sits, so allow it adequate time to reach desired thickness before proceeding.
