Oreo Poke Cake
Description
The Oreo Poke Cake starts with a classic chocolate cake baked in a 9x13 pan. While still warm, the cake is punctured with evenly spaced holes to allow a smooth Oreo pudding mixture to soak through. The pudding is prepared by whisking Oreo instant pudding with milk until it slightly thickens but does not firm completely. Once poured over the cake, the pudding fills the holes, keeping the cake moist and adding Oreo flavor throughout.
After chilling to allow the pudding to set, the top layer of the cake is covered with whipped topping and sprinkled with crushed Oreo cookies. The crunch of the cookies adds textural contrast to the soft, creamy cake beneath. This dessert benefits from being served chilled, making it a refreshing choice with the recognizable chocolate and cream flavors of Oreos embedded in every bite.
For best results, poke holes immediately after baking while the cake is warm, and allow the pudding mixture to thicken slightly before pouring. Leftover cake should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator and consumed within three days. Apply the crushed Oreos to only the portions served immediately to avoid sogginess.
Ingredients
- 1 chocolate cake mix Plus ingredients to make cake, box
- 2 Instant pudding mix 4 ounces each, Oreo flavor, packages
- 4 cups milk 2%
- 8 ounces Cool Whip
- 1 cup Oreo cookies crushed
Instructions
- Make cake mix according to directions and bake in a greased 9×13 pan.
- When cake is done, immediately poke holes over the cake using the end of a wooden spoon in about 1 in. intervals.
- Let cake cool while you prepare pudding mixture. In a medium size bowl whisk together milk and pudding mix. Make sure to whisk out all of the lumps. Let the pudding mixture sit for about 2 minutes. You want it somewhat thickened but not set like pudding.
- Pour pudding mixture over warm cake. Allow the cake to cool for a few minutes. Put in the fridge to set up which takes about an hour.
- When cake is set spread Cool Whip over top and sprinkle with crushed Oreo cookies. If you don’t plan on eating all the cake just sprinkle Oreos on what you will eat or they get soggy.
Notes
- Keep the cake refrigerated until serving; it can stay at room temperature for a few hours during parties.
- Immediately poke holes in the warm cake after baking for easier piercing and better pudding absorption.
- Let the pudding mixture thicken slightly so it is pourable but not fully set before adding to the cake.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to three days.
- Add crushed Oreos only on the portions you plan to serve immediately to prevent sogginess.
