Oven Baked Chili Cheese Dogs
Description
This recipe involves placing hot dogs inside buns pre-lined in a foil-lined baking pan, then adding mustard, ketchup, and relish to the inside bottom of each bun. Chili is ladled generously over the hot dogs, followed by shredded cheese and chopped onions. Covering the pan and baking at 375°F for 30 minutes allows the cheese to melt evenly and the chili to warm thoroughly.
Baking rather than grilling or pan-frying allows all components to meld, softening the buns slightly while keeping the cheese melted and the hot dogs warm. Removing the foil after baking helps develop a slight crust on top. This preparation results in a hearty, saucy sandwich with a balance of spicy, savory, and cheesy notes from the toppings and chili.
These baked chili cheese dogs are suitable as a filling lunch or casual dinner, particularly for gatherings where quick plating is helpful. Customizable toppings offer extra texture and flavor variations for each eater.
