Paleo Hot Cocoa Bombs

Paleo Hot Cocoa Bombs are chocolate spheres made by molding melted dark chocolate, filled with a blend of cocoa powder, coconut sugar, and optional mix-ins like miniature marshmallows or sprinkles. When dropped into hot milk, the chocolate shell melts and releases the cocoa mixture, creating a rich, dairy-free hot cocoa drink with a customizable flavor and texture from the chosen fillings.

Description

This recipe uses melted dark chocolate combined with coconut oil to form thin shells in silicone molds. After chilling until firm, the shells are filled with a mixture of cocoa powder and coconut sugar, along with optional add-ins such as mini chocolate chips or marshmallows. The two halves are then gently warmed to seal them together and chilled again.

The resulting chocolate bombs hold their shape until immersed in hot milk, where they melt and release the cocoa and mix-ins, creating a warm, rich drink. The use of coconut sugar and dark chocolate aligns with the paleo dietary approach, while the technique of melting and molding chocolate shells allows for an impressive presentation.

These hot cocoa bombs are great for individual servings and customizable with various fillings, adding fun and flavor to a cozy beverage. Serve by pouring hot milk over a bomb in a mug and stirring as it melts to combine.

Using molds designed for hot cocoa bombs makes shaping easier, and leftovers can be refrigerated to maintain firmness.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 cup dark chocolate chips
  • 2 tsp coconut oil
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp coconut sugar
  • mix ins mini chocolate chips, marshmallows, sprinkles

Instructions

  1. In a microwave safe dish, melt dark chocolate chips and coconut oil in 30 second increments, stopping to stir between each.
  2. Once melted, use a spoon to spoon about 1 tablespoon of melted chocolate into each silicone mold. Use spoon to move chocolate around so that the entire mold is filled.
  3. Place mold in fridge for 20 minutes.
  4. Once chocolate has hardened, carefully remove from molds.
  5. While they harden, make the hot cocoa powder. Mix cocoa powder and coconut sugar in a bowl and set aside.
  6. Heat a large nonstick skillet over VERY low heat.
  7. VERY carefully press one of the spheres down onto the skillet so that the edges melt slightly.
  8. Do this for each sphere. Fill hot cocoa bombs with mix ins (hot cocoa powder, marshmallows, sprinkles, etc.).
  9. Press two sphere halves together and repeat for remaining spheres.
  10. If desired, melt additional chocolate and drizzle on top.
  11. Place bombs on a plate and refrigerate for 10 minutes.
  12. Once hardened, remove from fridge.
  13. Place each bomb in a mug. Heat 1 cup of almond milk (or desired milk) and pour onto bombs.
  14. Bombs will explode due to the heated milk and mix ins will rise to the top. Mix with a spoon and serve!

Notes

  • Specific hot cocoa bomb molds (or large circular molds) are needed to shape the chocolate spheres effectively.
  • Pour hot milk over the bomb in a mug to melt it and create the cocoa drink.
  • Customize mix-ins such as mini marshmallows and sprinkles to taste.
