Paloma

The Paloma is a refreshing cocktail combining tequila with fresh grapefruit and lime juices, balanced by agave nectar and brightened with sparkling water. The glass rimmed with Tajin seasoning or salt adds a subtle spice or saltiness that complements the drink’s citrusy notes. It’s a sparkling, slightly tart beverage served over ice.

Description

This Paloma recipe mixes 1 ounce of tequila with 4 ounces fresh grapefruit juice, ½ ounce lime juice, and ½ ounce agave nectar, then tops off with sparkling water. The drink is served over ice in a glass rimmed with Tajin seasoning or coarse salt, enhancing the flavor with a spicy or savory edge.

The simple stirring method integrates the ingredients without diluting them, maintaining a crisp effervescent quality. The combination offers a balance of sweetness, acidity, and light bitterness from grapefruit, making it a popular choice for those seeking a bright yet gentle tequila cocktail.

The recipe also includes instructions for scaling to a pitcher for group servings and a note on making a virgin version by omitting tequila, providing versatility for different preferences.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 ounce tequila
  • 4 ounces grapefruit juice fresh
  • 4 ounces sparkling water
  • ½ ounce lime juice
  • ½ ounce agave nectar

Optional

  • 1 teaspoon tajin seasoning or coarse salt - to rim the glass

Instructions

  2. Add Tajin or coarse salt to a small plate.
  3. Dip the rim of the glass in the Tajin or coarse salt.
  4. Fill the glass with ice.
  5. Add the tequila, grapefruit juice, sparkling water, lime juice and agave nectar.
  6. Use a spoon to stir all of the ingredients together in the glass. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • To prepare a larger batch, adjust the serving amount to make a pitcher and combine ingredients without ice before adding ice to individual glasses.
  • Rimming the glass with Tajin or salt adds complementary spice or saltiness that enhances the cocktail's flavors.
  • A traditional Paloma uses Squirt soda; this recipe swaps fresh grapefruit juice and sparkling water for a fresher taste.
  • For a non-alcoholic version, omit tequila and serve as a refreshing mocktail.
