Pan-Fried Gnocchi with Butter & Basil

Pan-Fried Gnocchi with Butter & Basil offers tender gnocchi cooked to a golden brown in butter, seasoned with salt, pepper, and fresh basil leaves, then finished with Pecorino Romano or Parmesan cheese. The pan-frying develops a crisp exterior while keeping the interior soft, combining richness from butter and bright herbal notes from basil.

Description

This recipe can start with either boiled gnocchi drained and patted dry or raw gnocchi added directly to the melted butter. Boiled gnocchi are pan-fried for a few minutes until golden and slightly crisp on the outside. Alternatively, raw gnocchi cook through in the butter over about eight minutes, turning to coat evenly and develop a golden crust. The butter is melted and salted, providing a flavorful cooking base.

Fresh basil leaves are added near the end for their aromatic herbal touch. Finishing the dish with freshly grated Pecorino Romano or Parmesan cheese adds a savory depth and balances the richness of the butter and gnocchi. The result is a simple but satisfying dish highlighting the gnocchi’s tender interior and lightly crisp exterior with complementary buttery and herb flavors.

This can be served as a quick side or main dish and pairs well with light salads or steamed vegetables for a balanced meal.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 pound gnocchi fresh
  • 6 tablespoons butter unsalted
  • 1/2 /2 cup basil fresh leaves
  • 1/2 /2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 /2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 /4 cup Pecorino Romano cheese freshly grated, or Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, over medium heat, melt the butter until it starts to bubble, then add a dash of salt and pepper and turn off the heat.

If you want to boil the gnocchi first.

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the fresh pre made gnocchi and cook for 2 minutes, or until they float to the top of the boiling water.
  2. Remove the gnocchi with a slotted spoon and place them spaced apart on a serving platter lined with a clean towel. Gently pat them dry, being sure they don't stick together.
  3. Turn the heat back on under the skillet with the browned butter and after a minute or two transfer the gnocchi to the pan and sauté for 2 minutes or until golden brown.

If you want to pan fry gnocchi without boiling them first.

  1. Add the gnocchi directly to the melted butter and coat completely and cook over medium heat for about 8 minutes, mixing and turning the gnocchi as they pan fry.
  2. Once the gnocchi are pan fried, mix in the fresh basil leaves and Pecorino Romano and gently stir, then turn off the heat.
  3. Transfer to a serving plate and serve immediately.
