Parmesan Cream Sauce

Parmesan Cream Sauce is a rich, creamy sauce made from butter, flour, milk, and Parmesan cheese, thickened on the stovetop to a smooth consistency. It offers a savory, cheesy flavor that's ideal for drizzling over vegetables, potatoes, pasta, or as a dip. The sauce uses whole milk and can be seasoned with black pepper for subtle spice.

Description

The Parmesan Cream Sauce uses a roux base made by melting butter and whisking in flour, which is then gradually combined with heated milk to form a smooth cream sauce. Parmesan cheese is folded in at the end, enriching the sauce with its signature salty, nutty flavor. The preparation calls for careful temperature control to avoid lumps and ensure a silky texture.

This sauce is versatile: it can be warmed to accompany vegetables or potatoes, tossed with pasta, or used as a creamy layer in lasagna. Adjusting flour quantity will influence its thickness, allowing customization according to use.

Practical notes suggest storing any leftovers covered and refrigerated for 2 to 3 days. The sauce can also serve as a dip for breadsticks or vegetables, making it useful beyond main dishes.

Ingredients

Servings
  • cups milk whole, divided
  • 2 tablespoons butter salted
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup Parmesan Cheese

Instructions

  1. In a small pot heat the milk until very hot but do not boil.
  2. In a medium pot over low heat melt the butter, remove from heat and add the flour and whisk until smooth.
  3. Slowly add most of the 1 cup of milk, stir until combined, place again on low/medium heat and stirring continually until thickened.
  4. Remove the pot from the heat and add the remaining ¼ cup of milk and the parmesan cheese, stir until combined and smooth. Add a dash or 2 of black pepper if desired. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate if not using immediately. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Try the sauce as a warm dip for breadsticks or cut vegetables.
  • Keep leftovers covered tightly in the refrigerator, consuming within 2-3 days.
  • Reduce flour to 2 tablespoons instead of 3 for a thinner sauce consistency.
