Peanut Butter Brownies

Peanut Butter Brownies feature a classic boxed brownie base topped with a creamy peanut butter layer and finished with a smooth melted chocolate topping and sprinkles. The peanut butter adds richness and a smooth texture that complements the moist brownies beneath. This layered dessert showcases a balance between fudgy brownies, sweet peanut butter frosting, and chocolate glaze, perfect for those looking to enhance a simple brownie with a nutty twist.

Description

This recipe uses a family-size boxed brownie mix as its base, prepared according to package instructions with the addition of vanilla extract for flavor. Once cooled, a creamy peanut butter frosting is prepared by combining peanut butter, powdered sugar, softened butter, and milk, which is then spread evenly over the brownies. The final layer consists of melted chocolate chips mixed with butter, poured over the peanut butter layer, quickly topped with chocolate sprinkles, and chilled to set.

The layered construction produces a textural contrast between the dense, fudgy brownies, the smooth, sweet peanut butter middle, and the glossy chocolate topping. The recipe yields a thick brownie if baked in a 9"x9" pan, though a 9"x13" pan can be used for a thinner bar. The chilled setting step helps the toppings firm up for easy slicing and serving.

Peanut Butter Brownies provide a rich dessert suitable for occasions when a richer, layered chocolate and peanut butter treat is desired. They can be lifted easily from the pan using the foil overhang and cut into squares for serving or sharing.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 box brownie mix family size, around 18-20 ounces
  • egg as called for on brownie mix box
  • oil
  • water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 12 tablespoons butter softened, divided use
  • 3/4 cup peanut butter creamy
  • 2 cups powdered sugar sifted
  • 2 teaspoons milk or cream or water
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup chocolate sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Line a 9"x9" or 9"x13" pan with foil, leaving an overhang on the sides. Coat with cooking spray.
  2. Prepare the brownie mix with the eggs, oil and water as called for on the package. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  3. Let the brownies cool completely.
  4. In a medium bowl with a mixer, beat 8 tablespoons of the butter until fluffy. Add the peanut butter powdered sugar and milk. Beat until thoroughly combined.
  5. Spread the peanut butter mixture evenly over the brownies.
  6. Place the chocolate chips and remaining 4 tablespoons of butter in a bowl. Microwave in 30 second increments until melted. Stir until smooth. Let the chocolate sit for 5 minutes at room temperature or until it's lukewarm.
  7. Spread the chocolate evenly over the peanut butter layer. Quickly add the sprinkles on top. Chill for at least 30 minutes. Use the foil overhang to lift the brownies out of the pan. Cut into squares and serve.

Notes

  • You can use a 9"x9" pan for thicker brownies or a 9"x13" pan for thinner portions.
  • Adding vanilla extract to the brownie mix enhances the overall flavor.
  • Chilling the brownies after topping helps the chocolate layer set for clean slices.
  • This recipe was adapted from Betty Crocker.
