Peanut Butter Frosting

This peanut butter frosting is a smooth and creamy blend made from butter, peanut butter, powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract. Its rich and nutty flavor comes through clearly with a consistency you can adjust depending on use, whether for spreading or piping. The frosting is ideal for topping cakes, cupcakes, or cookies, providing a balanced sweetness with the distinctive taste and creaminess of peanut butter enhanced by vanilla.

Description

Peanut Butter Frosting combines butter and creamy or crunchy peanut butter into a silky, sweet topping for baked goods. The powdered sugar adds sweetness and thickens the frosting while milk adjusts the texture. Vanilla extract complements and deepens the flavor. This frosting is beaten until light and smooth, making it suitable for decorating or filling desserts.

The richness of the butter balances the peanut butter's distinctive nuttiness, producing a frosting that is dense yet spreadable. You can control the texture by gradually adding milk or cream, achieving the desired stiffness or looseness for various applications.

Use salted butter for a subtle saltiness or unsalted with a pinch of added salt for control. This frosting is best used soon after making, but can be refrigerated and brought back to room temperature before use.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 6 tablespoons butter at cool room temperature
  • 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter at room temperature, or crunchy peanut butter
  • 2 ½ cups powdered sugar sifted
  • 2-4 tablespoons milk or heavy whipping cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, add butter and beat until creamy.
  2. Add in peanut butter, and beat on medium until well-combined, scraping the sides of the bowl as needed.
  3. Add powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons milk, and vanilla.
  4. Beat on low for 30 seconds, or until powdered sugar is just combined.
  5. Increase speed to medium, and continue beating until frosting is well-combined.
  6. Add additional milk as necessary to get the desired consistency.

Notes

  • Using salted butter enhances the flavor; if using unsalted, add 1/4 teaspoon salt to balance the taste.
  • Choose a regular peanut butter brand for consistent texture and flavor.
  • Sift powdered sugar beforehand to avoid lumps and ensure smooth frosting.
  • For a lighter texture, substitute milk with heavy whipping cream when adjusting consistency.
