Peanut Butter Frosting
Description
This Peanut Butter Frosting combines softened unsalted butter and creamy peanut butter beaten until smooth and creamy. Gradually added powdered sugar sweetens and thickens the mixture. Vanilla extract and salt round out the flavor profile. Milk is stirred in last to achieve the desired consistency, and the frosting is whipped briefly at high speed to become light and spreadable.
The frosting is designed to be spread or piped onto completely cooled baked goods such as cupcakes, sheet cakes, or layer cakes. Its texture holds shape but remains creamy enough for easy spreading.
Yield considerations include being enough to frost a 9x13-inch sheet cake, an 8- or 9-inch two-layer round cake, 24 cupcakes, or generously cover 12 cupcakes with a thicker layer.
Testing with natural peanut butter works, though may introduce slight grittiness compared to creamy commercial peanut butter.
Ingredients
- 1 cup butter softened to room temperature, unsalted
- 1 cup peanut butter creamy
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 2 Tablespoons milk
Instructions
- Combine butter and peanut butter in a large bowl and use an electric mixer to beat until creamy and well-combined.
- Gradually (about ⅓ cup at a time), with mixer on low speed add powdered sugar until completely combined. Be sure to scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl so all ingredients are well-combined.
- Stir in vanilla extract and salt.
- With mixer on low-speed, add milk and stir until well-combined. Gradually increase speed to high and beat for 30 seconds.
- Spread or pipe frosting onto completely cooled cupcakes or cake.
Notes
- This frosting covers a 9x13" sheet cake, two 8" or 9" layer cakes, 24 cupcakes, or generously decorates 12 cupcakes.
- Natural peanut butter can be used but may give a slightly gritty texture.
