Pear Mug Pie

Pear Mug Pie is a cozy dessert featuring sliced pears cooked with butter, brown sugar, and warm spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. The fruit is spooned into mugs and topped with puff pastry stars baked until golden and flaky. Served with vanilla ice cream, this dessert combines soft, spiced pears with crisp, buttery pastry accents for an enjoyable textural contrast and comforting flavor.

Description

Pear Mug Pie brings together peeled and sliced Royal Riviera pears gently cooked in butter with brown sugar and a blend of warm spices including cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. This creates a tender, sweet-spiced fruit base. The topping is made from puff pastry cut into small star shapes, brushed with beaten egg, sprinkled with turbinado sugar, and baked until puffed and golden, adding a flaky, crisp component.

The dessert is assembled by spooning the cooked pears into mugs, topping with warm pastry stars, and finishing with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The combination offers a comforting balance of soft, juicy fruit and crisp pastry, enhanced by the creamy ice cream.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 puff pastry thawed, sheet
  • 1 large egg lightly beaten
  • 2 tablespoons turbinado sugar raw
  • 4 royal riviera pears peeled and sliced, brand example Harry and David
  • 2 tablespoons butter unsalted
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg freshly grated
  • 1 pinch ground ginger
  • vanilla ice cream for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Use a small star-shaped cookie cut to make cuts in the puff pastry. You can use whatever kind of cookie cutter you’d like! Brush each piece with the beaten egg and sprinkle the turbinado sugar on top.
  3. Bake the puff pastry for 15 to 20 minutes, or until they are golden and puffed.
  4. While the puff pastry is baking, heat a skillet over medium heat and melt the butter. Once melted, add the pears and stir. Cook for 5 minutes, until they soften slightly. Add in the brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, nutmeg and ginger. Stir and cook for 5 minutes more, until the pears are tender.
  5. To serve the mug pies, spoon the pears into the bottom of your mug. Top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a few of the puff pastry stars.
