Peeps Rice Krispie Treats Recipe
Description
Peeps Rice Krispie Treats Recipe uses six cups of crispy rice cereal layered over an assortment of Peeps marshmallows in a baking pan. Butter slices laid on top melt during an 8-minute bake, allowing the Peeps to blend with the cereal as they soften. A light mix stir combines the ingredients while still warm, binding the cereal to the melted marshmallow and butter mix. Vanilla extract can be added during mixing for a delicate hint of flavor.
This method results in treats that are softer than traditional rice krispie squares, especially enjoyed warm but still easily cut once cooled slightly. Using a disposable or 9x13 pan is recommended for ease of handling. The color variety of Peeps makes these treats festive and suitable for different holidays depending on the Marshmallow choices.
The recipe notes offer various ways to modify the treats, including swapping the Peeps colors for seasonal themes or using gluten-free cereals to accommodate dietary needs. Adding colored sprinkles can brighten the look further. For presentation, treats can be shaped with cookie cutters and wrapped individually for gifting.
Ingredients
- 6 cups Rice Krispies or other rice cereal
- 16-20 Peeps Variety of colors
- 6 tablespoons butter unsalted or salted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract optional
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees F and spray a disposable aluminum pan or 9x13 inch pan with cooking spray or butter lightly.
- Place Peeps separately, in a variety of color combinations, into the bottom of the pan, then pour rice krispies over the top of the peeps, give it a shake to even the cereal out.
- Slice the butter into thin slices and lay evenly over the top of the rice krispies. Bake for 8 minutes.
- Spray a spatula or spoon with non-stick spray and gently stir to combine the Peeps with the rice krispies cereal, sprinkle a little vanilla extract over the top while you are stirring.
- Peeps rice krispie treats are extra soft and delicious warm out of the oven, but may be cooled and cut into squares while still warm. If thicker squares are desired, push the Rice Krispie Treats into one side of the pan.
Notes
- Peeps can be swapped for themed varieties to suit different holidays or occasions.
- Use gluten-free cereal and ensure vanilla extract is gluten-free to make the treats gluten-free.
- Colored sprinkles add extra vibrancy to the mixture if desired.
- Press treats into shapes using cookie cutters and insert sticks for pops; drizzle with white or dark chocolate for decoration.
- Package treats individually with wax paper separators to keep them fresh and prevent sticking.
