Pepito

The pepito is the favorite sandwich of Venezuelan street food made with beef (or chicken) and toppings soaked in sauces.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 bread rolls (hoagie type)
  • 2 beef steak about ½ lb / 200 g each), cut into thin strips
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (or lard or melted butter)
  • 1 tablespoon garlic crushed
  • 1 tablespoon Salsa roja or Worcestershire sauce
  • salt
  • black pepper

For the garnishes and sauces

  • vegetables lettuce, cabbage, carrot and tomato, shredded
  • guasacaca sauce (Venezuelan avocado relish)
  • mustard
  • mayonnaise
  • ketchup
  • 1 potato fried (optional, large grated
  • cheese grated

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, season the beef strips with salt and pepper.
  2. Heat the oil (or other fat) in a heavy-bottomed pan and fry the beef over high heat until just browned.
  3. Add the garlic, roja and / or Worcestershire sauce and cook 2 to 3 minutes more, or until desired doneness.
  4. Remove from the heat and, optionally, adjust the seasoning.
  5. While the meat is cooking, reheat the bread rolls and split them in half lengthwise.
  6. First, garnish the 4 buns with the vegetables. Divide the beef among the 4 rolls, placing it on the vegetables.
  7. Garnish with grated fried potato (optional).
  8. Drizzle with guasacaca sauce and any other sauce, and garnish with grated cheese.
  9. Serve immediately.
