Peppermint Bark

Peppermint Bark layers melted dark chocolate with white chocolate flavored with peppermint extract and finishes with crushed peppermint candies. This confection offers a contrast of bittersweet and creamy flavors with a crunchy peppermint topping. Cooling the layered chocolate melts hardens it into a solid bark that breaks into pieces and can be served as a festive treat.

Description

Peppermint Bark starts by melting semi-sweet dark chocolate and spreading it as the first layer. White chocolate is melted separately and combined with peppermint extract before being poured over the dark chocolate layer. The crushed peppermint candies are sprinkled on top and gently pressed in before chilling the bark to set.

The resultant treat combines the smooth mouthfeel of melted chocolate with the crisp and refreshing crunch of peppermint candies. The dark chocolate base balances the sweetness of the white chocolate and the coolness of peppermint, making it distinctive.

This bark can be cut into irregular chunks and served during the holidays or as a minty snack. It is best stored refrigerated or in a cool place until ready to serve.

Using either chocolate chips or melting chocolate can affect the smoothness of the layers, and the chilling time helps the white chocolate solidify firmly over the dark layer to maintain separation.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 30 peppermint candies , crushed
  • 1 1/2 pounds dark chocolate semi-sweet
  • 1 1/2 pounds white chocolate
  • 3/4 teaspoon peppermint extract

Instructions

  1. Line a 9x13 baking pan with parchment paper and melt the dark chocolate chips in the microwave in 30 second increments in a glass bowl until fully melted (stirring each time, about 90 seconds).
  2. Pour the dark chocolate onto the baking pan and spread, then melt the white chocolate chips in the microwave in 30 second increments until fully melted then add in the peppermint extract.
  3. Pour the white chocolate chips over dark chocolate chips carefully and evenly, then top with the crushed candies, pushing them in slightly before cooling the pan in the refrigerator until fully hardened (about 30 minutes).

Notes

  • Use either chocolate chips or melting chocolate for easier melting.
  • Press crushed peppermint candies lightly into the white chocolate while still warm for better adhesion.
  • Cool the bark in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes to ensure it hardens fully before breaking.
  • Microwaving in 30-second increments with stirring helps prevent chocolate from burning.
