Peppermint Hot Chocolate
Description
This hot chocolate recipe uses whole or 2% milk combined with heavy cream to create a luxurious base. Granulated sugar and a pinch of salt balance the sweetness and enhance the chocolate flavor. Semisweet chocolate melts into the warm mixture, thickening it slightly, while vanilla and peppermint extracts add depth and a refreshing minty aroma.
The drink is gently heated to avoid scorching, whisking continuously to achieve a smooth, glossy consistency. The peppermint adds a distinctive seasonal note without overwhelming the chocolate richness.
Serve this hot chocolate in mugs with optional garnishes like lightly sweetened whipped cream, marshmallows, or crushed candy canes to complement the peppermint flavor. The recipe suits smaller servings due to its richness.
For lighter versions, reduce the chocolate amount or omit heavy cream, and consider substituting white chocolate or peppermint schnapps for variations in flavor and sweetness.
Ingredients
- 1 cup milk (whole or 2% are best)
- 1/4 cup heavy cream
- 1 to 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (depending on how sweet you like it)
- pinch kosher salt
- 3 ounces semisweet chocolate about 1/2 cup, finely chopped; or chocolate chips
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/8 teaspoon peppermint extract
- Whipped Cream for garnish (optional, crushed candy canes; ingredients listed together
- marshmallow
- candy cane
Instructions
- In a pot, whisk together milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla and peppermint extracts, and salt. Heat on the stove on medium-low until bubbles start to form around the side of the pan.
- Reduce heat to low, add chocolate and extracts, and whisk until melted, glossy, and thickened slightly, 1-2 minutes.
- Pour into a mug and top with lightly-sweetened whipped cream or marshmallows and a sprinkling of crushed candy canes.
Notes
- This hot chocolate is quite rich; small servings are recommended.
- To make it lighter, reduce chocolate to 2 ounces and omit heavy cream, using more milk instead.
- Alternative versions can use white chocolate instead of semisweet.
- Peppermint extract can be replaced by peppermint schnapps for an adult variation.
