Perfect Chocolate Buttercream Frosting Recipe
Description
The Perfect Chocolate Buttercream Frosting Recipe combines softened butter with unsweetened cocoa powder, confectioners' sugar, milk, vanilla extract, and espresso powder. The process involves creaming butter and cocoa thoroughly before gradually incorporating sugar and milk, which ensures a smooth, fluffy texture. Adjusting milk or sugar levels tailors the consistency for spreading or piping.
This frosting offers a rich chocolate flavor balanced by a mild coffee undertone from the espresso powder, enhancing the depth without overwhelming sweetness. The texture is creamy and spreadable, making it ideal for decorating cakes or cupcakes.
It can be refrigerated or frozen for storage; refrigeration lasts up to five days and requires whipping to restore fluffiness before use. Freezing is suitable for up to three months, with thawing and re-whipping recommended prior to application, allowing preparation ahead of serving.
Ingredients
- 1½ cups butter softened
- 1 cup cocoa powder unsweetened
- 5 cups confectioners' sugar
- ½ cup milk whole, half and half, or heavy cream preferred
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon espresso powder
Instructions
- Add cocoa powder to a large bowl or bowl of stand mixer. Whisk through to remove any lumps.
- Cream together butter and cocoa powder until well-combined.
- Add confectioner's sugar to a large bowl. Whisk through to remove any lumps. Alternatively, you may sift the confectioner's sugar into the large bowl. Add the confectioner's sugar and milk to the cocoa mixture by adding 1 cup of confectioner's sugar followed by about a tablespoon of milk. After each addition has been combined, turn the mixer onto a high speed for about a minute. Repeat until all sugar and milk have been added.
- Add vanilla extract and espresso powder and combine well.
- If frosting appears too dry, add more milk, a tablespoon at a time until it reaches the right consistency. If it appears to wet and does not hold its form, add more confectioner’s sugar, a tablespoon at a time until it reaches the right consistency.
Notes
- Store frosting in an airtight container refrigerated for up to 5 days; bring to room temperature and whisk before use to restore texture.
- Frosting can be frozen up to 3 months; thaw overnight in refrigerator and whisk before applying.
