Perfect Graham Cracker Crust
Description
The Perfect Graham Cracker Crust uses about 1 ½ cups of homemade graham cracker crumbs made from roughly 13 rectangular crackers. These crumbs are combined with three tablespoons of brown sugar and one tablespoon of flour for structure when baked. Melted salted butter helps bind the crumbs into a cohesive crust.
The mixture is spread evenly across the bottom and sides of a 9-inch pie plate and pressed down tightly, using fingers and the bottom of a measuring cup for firmness. Baking at 350°F for 8 to 10 minutes allows the crust to become fragrant and set, but it should not brown excessively to preserve texture and color.
This crust provides a sturdy, subtle-sweet base that works well underneath cream or fruit-filled pies. The optional flour supports baking stability if the crust is baked before adding filling. Adjust sweetness by increasing sugar if desired.
The recipe notes recommend crushing crackers at home for a better texture over store-bought fine crumbs. Omit flour if baking is not planned to retain crumbly texture, which can be useful for no-bake desserts.
Ingredients
- 1 ½ cups graham cracker crumbs about 12-13 rectangle graham crackers - see note
- 3 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon flour see note
- 6 tablespoons butter melted, salted
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
- Combine the graham crackers, sugar, and flour in a medium bowl. Stir to combine.
- Add the butter and stir until the graham cracker crumbs are evenly moistened.
- Scatter the crumbs across the bottom of a 9-inch pie plate. Use your fingers to lightly press the crumbs into an even layer on the bottom and up the sides of the pie plate.
- Grab a 1/3- or 1/2-cup measuring cup and use the bottom of the measuring cup to press the crumbs into a tighter layer across the bottom and into the sides of the pie plate.
- Bake the crust for 8-10 minutes until fragrant and set (don't let it brown too much).
Notes
- For better texture, crush whole graham crackers yourself instead of using pre-made crumbs.
- The crust is lightly sweet; add extra sugar if you prefer a sweeter base.
- Omit the flour if you do not plan to bake the crust, keeping the texture crumbly.
