Perfect Whipped Cream Recipe
Description
Starting with chilled heavy cream, sugar (such as confectioner's sugar, honey, or maple syrup), and vanilla extract, this recipe details whipping the mixture in a cold bowl using a mixer until you reach the desired peak stage. The chilling of the mixing bowl and whisk beforehand helps the cream whip properly and hold volume.
The whipped cream is sweetened mildly and flavored simply, making it versatile for topping cakes, pies, or fresh fruit. It should be served promptly or stored correctly to maintain texture.
For stabilization, adding cream of tartar is suggested to keep the cream firmer for longer refrigerated storage. A variety of flavor variations are possible by substituting or adding ingredients such as cocoa powder, jam, or extracts.
Overwhipping can cause curdling; this can be remedied by gently folding in liquid heavy cream to restore smoothness. Whipped cream can also be frozen in portions for convenience, thawing before use.
Ingredients
- 1 cup heavy cream cold
- 2 tablespoons sugar confectioner's sugar, honey, or maple syrup
- 1/2 /2 teaspoon vanilla extract or other extracts or flavorings
Instructions
- Prep. Place mixer bowl and whisk in freezer for at least 20 minutes to chill.
- Whip. Pour heavy whipping cream, sugar and vanilla into the cold bowl and whisk on high speed until medium to stiff peaks form, about 1 minute. Do not over beat.
- Serve. Serve immediately or see notes for how to store and freeze.
Notes
- Chilling mixing tools is essential for the cream to whip properly and attain volume.
- Use 1 cup of heavy cream to yield approximately 2 cups of whipped cream after whipping.
- To stabilize for longer hold, add 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar with sugar before whipping.
- Freeze whipped cream in spoonfuls on a parchment sheet, then store in freezer-safe containers for later use.
- If whipped cream starts to curdle or become lumpy, gently fold in fresh liquid heavy cream a tablespoon at a time to smooth it out.
- Flavor variations include substituting sugar with honey, maple syrup, adding cinnamon, cocoa powder, or folding in fruit preserves after initial whipping.
