Popcorn Balls Recipe

This Popcorn Balls recipe transforms plain microwaved popcorn into sweet, colorful treat balls by coating them in a warm mixture of powdered sugar, mini marshmallows, corn syrup, and margarine or butter. The mixture binds the popcorn into sticky but manageable balls that are shaped by hand after cooling slightly, offering a chewy sweet snack with a light crunch.

Description

The preparation starts with popping plain popcorn and removing un-popped kernels to ensure a pleasant texture. A syrup is prepared by heating together powdered sugar, marshmallows, corn syrup, margarine, water, and optional food coloring to form a sticky glaze. This is poured over the popcorn and stirred to coat every kernel evenly.

After cooling briefly, buttering the hands prevents sticking while shaping the popcorn mixture into 3 to 4-inch balls. This technique results in handheld sweets that hold together without excessive mess. The balls can be wrapped in plastic wrap and stored at room temperature, making them convenient for parties or snacks.

Food coloring adds visual appeal, and making the balls smaller with inserted popsicle sticks helps reduce stickiness when served.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 (3.2-ounce) bags Popcorn plain, microwave
  • cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup mini marshmallows
  • ¾ cup light corn syrup
  • 4 tablespoons margarine or unsalted butter, plus more for your hands
  • 2 teaspoons water cold
  • Food Coloring a few drops, of choice

Instructions

  1. Pop popcorn and pour it into a large bowl, removing any un-popped kernels.
  2. In a medium pot over medium-high heat, combine powdered sugar, marshmallows, corn syrup, margarine, water, and food coloring. Heat and stir until the mixture comes to a boil.
  3. Carefully pour over the popcorn, stirring to coat each kernel.
  4. Let cool a bit, then butter your fingers so you can easily handle and shape popcorn into 3–4-inch balls before they cool.
  5. Wrap with plastic wrap and store at room temperature.

Notes

  • Popcorn balls can be made ahead and stored wrapped at room temperature for up to 5 days.
  • For easier handling, make smaller balls and insert popsicle sticks before wrapping to reduce stickiness.
