Pretzel Rods Recipe

This Pretzel Rods Recipe combines crunchy pretzel rods dipped first in a homemade caramel sauce, then coated in melted chocolate. The layered coating creates a sweet and salty treat with a gooey caramel center wrapped in a firm chocolate exterior. Adding toppings or sprinkles before the chocolate hardens adds textural contrast and decorative appeal. This recipe yields approximately 30 rods, ideal for gifting or party snacks.

Description

Pretzel Rods Recipe features store-bought pretzel rods dipped in a rich homemade caramel sauce made from brown sugar, sweetened condensed milk, corn syrup, butter, and vanilla. After the caramel sets to a slightly sticky stage, the rods are dipped in melted chocolate candy coating and sprinkled with various toppings before the chocolate hardens. An optional white candy drizzle adds an attractive finish. The dual coating of caramel and chocolate delivers a combination of sweet, salty, and smooth textures.

The method involves careful temperature control of the caramel and timing for dipping the rods to achieve the proper gooey and solidified layers. The final treat offers crisp pretzel crunch, chewy caramel, and a smooth chocolate shell with added topping textures.

Pretzel rods coated this way make for a festive snack or dessert contribution and can be customized with sprinkles or nuts before chocolate sets. The recipe suggests melting half the chocolate and vanilla candy coating separately if dipping some rods in two colors.

Ingredients

Servings

Pretzels

  • 1 (12-ounce) bag pretzel rods about 30 rods
  • 1 (16-ounce) package Chocolate Candy quick
  • desired toppings and sprinkles

Homemade Caramel Sauce

  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup light corn syrup
  • ½ cup butter unsalted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Make caramel sauce by melting your butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add brown sugar, milk, and corn syrup. Boil over medium-high heat for 5 to 6 minutes, stirring constantly. Around 240°F (mixture will get thicker, a little shiny, and a tad darker). Remove from heat, add vanilla, and stir.
  2. Dip each pretzel in caramel and set on wax paper. You can choose to repeat this step for extra gooey pretzels.
  3. While caramel is setting, melt entire tray of chocolate candy quick according to package directions.
  4. When caramel is just a tad sticky to the touch, carefully lift rod and dip in chocolate. Place on a clean sheet of wax paper to harden.
  5. Be sure to sprinkle your preferred toppings immediately, before chocolate has set so that it sticks to the pretzels.
  6. For a beautiful white drizzle, wait for chocolate to harden, then melt a few squares of the white candy quick and drizzle over the top.

Notes

  • To customize colors, melt half the chocolate candy coating and half the vanilla candy coating separately for two-tone rods.
  • Handle the pretzel rods carefully after caramel dipping to avoid breaking the caramel layer.
  • Allow chocolate to harden completely before storage to maintain coating integrity.
