Instructions
Single serving (one mug)
- Add in a large mug 1 scoop chocolate protein powder, 1 1/2 tablespoons cocoa powder,1 pinch baking soda and 1 pinch sea salt.
- Add 2 tablespoons low-carb milk cold or at room temperature (not hot) and mix well, making a thick paste free of lumps. If needed, add a tiny bit more milk, just enough to form a paste.
- Heat the remaining 3/4 cup low-carb milk until it's steaming but not boiling. Gradually pour it into the dissolved protein hot chocolate powder, stirring continuously until fully incorporated. Enjoy!
Protein hot chocolate mix
- Put all ingredients in a food processor and pulse a few times to mix. Alternatively, add all ingredients to fill up to two thirds of an airtight container, and vigorously shake for a minute or two until completely mixed.
- To prepare the protein hot chocolate from the mix, add 4 to 5 tablespoons of the mix into a mug, and follow steps 2 and 3 of the single serving preparation instructions above.
Notes
- ⅛
- ¾ to the 6-mug mix recipe,
- If using any unflavored protein powder, add sweetener to taste: I suggest 1 to 2 tablespoons of sweetener to the One Mug recipe (added together with the protein powder) and 1/2 to 1 cup of sweetener to the Protein Hot Chocolate Mix recipe. If using flavored protein you probably won't need any sweetener, but you can add if you like.
- If using unflavored whey protein: You can add up to ⅛ teaspoon of xanthan gum to the single-serving recipe, or ¾ to the 6-mug mix recipe, for a creamier protein hot chocolate. Unflavored whey doesn't thicken milk as much as casein or plant protein powders.
- If using a non-chocolate protein powder, like vanilla or unflavored: I suggest adding 1/2 tablespoon of cocoa powder to the One Mug recipe (added together with the protein powder) and 1/4 cup of cocoa powder to the Protein Hot Chocolate Mix recipe.
- If the prepared drinking chocolate is not hot enough, you can put the mug in the microwave for a bit to warm it up (but don't boil). Warming will not curdle or damage the protein, as it's already dissolved.
- Adding about 1 tablespoon of keto chocolate chips or sugar-free shaved chocolate per mug will make this hot chocolate even more decadent. Add chips in just before the hot milk and they will melt as you mix.
- You can add sugar-free marshmallows or whipped cream topping if you like!
- Nutritional information shown is for portion (single mug) of the hot chocolate mix powder without milk or toppings.
