Pumpkin Dump Cake

Pumpkin Dump Cake is a simple layered dessert starting with a pumpkin mixture spiced with pumpkin pie seasoning, topped with dry yellow cake mix, melted butter, and chopped walnuts. The combination bakes into a moist, spiced cake with a crunchy nut topping, served warm often with ice cream or Cool Whip.

Description

This dessert begins by mixing canned pumpkin puree, pumpkin pie spice, evaporated milk, eggs, and sugar. The mixture is poured into a greased baking dish. The dry yellow cake mix is evenly layered over the pumpkin base, then melted butter is drizzled over the top followed by chopped walnuts. Baking for about an hour allows the dry cake mix to hydrate and form a cakey layer above the moist pumpkin beneath.

The nuts provide texture contrast, complementing the soft, spiced cake. Serving suggestions include dollops of Cool Whip or vanilla ice cream, which melt over the warm cake and add creaminess.

Notes emphasize important details including using pumpkin puree rather than pumpkin pie filling, alternatives to walnuts like pecans, and adding spices or toppings such as caramel sauce or whipped cream for variation.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 15 oz pumpkin puree canned
  • 2 tsp pumpkin pie spice
  • 12 oz evaporated milk
  • 3 egg
  • 1 c. white sugar
  • 15.25 oz yellow cake mix package
  • 3/4 c. butter melted
  • 1 1/2 c. walnuts chopped

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. In a large mixing bowl mix together pumpkin, pumpkin pie spice, evaporated milk, eggs, and sugar. Pour into greased 9 x 14 in pan or 2.5 quart baking dish.
  3. Sprinkle dry cake mix over the top of pumpkin mixture. Drizzle butter over the top of cake mix. Top with walnuts. Bake for 1 hour or until a knife inserted into the middle comes out clean.
  4. Serve with Cool Whip or ice cream.

Notes

  • Use canned pumpkin puree, not pumpkin pie filling, to ensure correct texture.
  • Chopped walnuts add crunch but can be substituted with pecans.
  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream, Cool Whip, or whipped cream for added richness.
  • Consider adding a drizzle of caramel sauce for extra sweetness and flavor.
