Quick and Easy Pear Crisp
Description
The filling combines peeled, sliced pears (or a mix of pears and apples) tossed with vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. This spiced fruit base is placed in a baking dish and covered with a streusel topping made from softened salted butter, all-purpose flour, rolled oats, brown and granulated sugars, chopped pecans, and salt. The topping is mixed until crumbly and spread evenly over the fruit. Baking for 45 minutes creates a crisp, golden-brown crust while allowing the pears to soften without losing all shape, maintaining some texture in the filling.
Once baked and slightly cooled, the crisp can be served warm or at room temperature. It pairs well with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce, which add creaminess and sweetness to the dessert. The recipe notes suggest using sweet, ripe Bartlett pears for better flavor and advise against slicing the fruit too thin to retain texture during baking. Extra pears can be frozen sliced for up to six months, preserving freshness for later use.
Ingredients
FOR THE FILLING
- 6 cups pear or use a combination of apples and pears, peeled and sliced, about 6-7 medium pears
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 ½ teaspoons cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
- ¼ teaspoon salt
FOR THE TOPPING
- 1 tick butter softened at room temperature, salted, ½ cup
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- ½ cup rolled oats
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- ½ cup brown sugar
- ⅓ cup pecans finely chopped
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- vanilla ice cream optional, for serving
- caramel sauce optional, for serving
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease an 8-inch square baking dish. Place peeled, sliced pears in a large bowl. Add vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ¼ teaspoon salt; toss to coat. Transfer pears to the prepared baking dish.
- In a separate bowl, use a fork (or your fingers) to mix together butter, flour, oats, granulated sugar, brown sugar, pecans, and salt until completely combined. The mixture will be lumpy and clumpy and should look like a streusel crumb topping.
- Spread topping evenly over the pears. Sprinkle with more cinnamon, if desired. Bake for 45 minutes, or until the top becomes golden brown and crispy and the pears are soft. Remove from the oven and let cool for 5-10 minutes.
- Serve warm or at room temperature. Top with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce!
Notes
- Choose ripe Bartlett pears for best flavor and sweetness in the crisp filling.
- Avoid slicing fruit too thin to prevent it from completely breaking down during baking; aim for visible slices.
- Freeze any excess sliced pears in an airtight container for up to six months to use later in desserts.
