Quick Bok Choy Stir Fry
Description
Quick Bok Choy Stir Fry uses fresh bok choy halved lengthwise, washed thoroughly to remove grit, and cooked in a hot skillet with vegetable oil. The stalks are first placed cut side down to develop slight color and tenderize through steaming with added water. Garlic and sesame oil are added towards the end to avoid burning, enhancing aroma and flavor. Soy sauce provides saltiness, while the optional sambal oelek adds a gentle chile heat. The dish finishes with a sprinkle of toasted sesame seeds for mild crunch and a nutty accent.
This stir fry is bright and lightly seasoned, preserving the crispness of the bok choy stems while softening the leafy greens. It works well as a quick side for many meals, providing a fresh vegetable option with minimal ingredients and preparation time.
Rinsing bok choy carefully is essential to eliminate dirt trapped within stalks. Adjust seasoning as desired, and substitute broth for water when steaming for richer flavor.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 pound bok choy about 3-4 small heads, small
- 3 cloves garlic minced, or to taste
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 2 teaspoons soy sauce
- ½ teaspoon sambal oelek (garlic chili paste), optional
- 2 teaspoons sesame seeds
Instructions
- Cut bok choy in half lengthwise and rinse well. Shake dry.
- Preheat oil in a large skillet over medium high heat.
- Add bok choy, cut side down, and 2 tablespoons of water. Cook 5-7 minutes, turning occasionally, until the bok choy becomes tender-crisp.
- Move the bok choy to one side and add garlic and sesame oil. Cook just until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Stir in soy sauce and chili paste if using. Toss with bok choy.
- Garnish with sesame seeds and serve warm.
Notes
- Thoroughly rinse bok choy as dirt can lodge between stalks.
- Cook bok choy cut side down first to get slight browning, turn as needed.
- Add garlic last to prevent burning by moving bok choy aside before cooking garlic.
- Soy sauce and Sambal Oelek provide enough seasoning, but taste and adjust.
- Add water or broth to aid steaming during cooking.
