Quick & Easy Honey Sesame Chicken
Description
This recipe starts by dicing skinless, boneless chicken thighs and seasoning them with salt before coating in cornstarch to form a crispy crust when fried. The chicken is pan-fried in vegetable oil until golden and crisp. The sauce combines honey, soy sauce, sesame oil, granulated sugar, sesame seeds, minced garlic, Shaoxing wine, rice vinegar, and water. After frying the chicken, excess oil is removed from the pan, and the sauce is simmered until thickened. The crispy chicken pieces are then tossed in the sauce until evenly coated.
The result is chicken with a crunchy exterior and moist interior, coated in a glossy, sweet-and-savory sauce highlighted by sesame flavor and a slight tang from vinegar. Chopped green onions garnish the dish for freshness.
This chicken pairs well with steamed rice or vegetables for a satisfying meal. The notes also offer an air fryer option, outlining how to arrange and cook the chicken without overlap and achieve crispiness without flipping.
Ingredients
- 1 lb chicken thigh skinless, boneless
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ cup cornstarch or potato starch for coating chicken
- ⅓ cup vegetable oil or any neutral oil
- ½ green onion finely chopped
Sauce
- ½ cup honey plain liquid kind
- 2.5 tablespoon soy sauce regular
- 2 tablespoon sesame oil
- ½ tablespoon granulated sugar or cane sugar, white
- 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch or potato starch
- 3 garlic minced, cloves
- 2 teaspoon Shaoxing wine or dry sherry wine, dry white wine or chicken broth for non-alcoholic version, cooking wine
- 2 teaspoon rice vinegar or apple cider/white vinegar
- ¾ cup water room temperature
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine the sauce ingredients as listed and set aside.
- Dice chicken thighs into 1.5-inch pieces and transfer to a large bowl. Season diced chicken with salt.
- Add cornstarch to the diced chicken and evenly coat each piece. Feel free to add more cornstarch if needed. Set aside.
- Heat vegetable oil in a large pan on medium-high heat. Fry coated chicken in small batches until golden brown and crispy, about 6-8 minutes in total, flipping halfway. Remove and transfer fried chicken to a wire rack or a paper towel lined plate.
- Remove any excess oil in the pan and pour the sauce to simmer until thickened.
- Toss in fried chicken into sauce until evenly coated. Remove off heat. Garnish with green onions. Enjoy!
Notes
- To make this dish in an air fryer, lightly spray the basket and chicken pieces with cooking spray and place chicken in a single layer without overlap.
- Air fry at 400°F for 10-14 minutes until crispy, no flipping required.
