Quick & Easy Spicy Gochujang Sesame Tofu

This spicy gochujang sesame tofu features extra firm tofu pan-fried until golden and crispy on the edges. The tofu is coated with a sauce combining Korean red chili paste, sesame seeds, soy sauce, sesame oil, sugar, and gochugaru, thickened with cornstarch and simmered briefly to create a glossy coating. Garnished with green onions, it offers a spicy, savory finish with a satisfying texture contrast.

Description

The recipe starts with extra firm tofu pressed and sliced into rectangles before frying in vegetable oil. Frying 5-7 minutes per side ensures the tofu develops a crisp golden crust while maintaining a tender interior. The sauce is made by mixing gochujang, sesame seeds, soy sauce, sesame oil, sugar, gochugaru, cornstarch, and water, which is poured over the tofu after frying and simmered to thicken.

This results in tofu pieces coated in a sticky, spicy, slightly sweet and savory sauce with pronounced Korean flavors. The sesame seeds add additional nutty texture. Garnished with finely chopped green onion, the dish is vibrant and flavorful.

Serve immediately to enjoy the contrast between crispy tofu exterior and saucy glaze. This dish works well as a main or side accompanying rice or vegetables.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 14 oz tofu extra firm
  • 1 green onion finely chopped for garnishing
  • 2 tablespoon vegetable oil or any neutral oil

Sauce

  • 1 tablespoon gochujang (Korean red chili paste)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce regular
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • ½ tablespoon cornstarch or sub with potato starch
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar or sub with cane or brown sugar, maple syrup or honey, white
  • ½ teaspoon gochugaru (Korean red chili flakes)
  • ½ cup water cold

Instructions

  1. Remove the block of tofu from the package and strain out excess water. Pat tofu dry with clean paper towels to remove excess moisture. Slice tofu into 1 cm thick rectangles (if you prefer them thicker, cut them into ½-inch thick pieces). Set aside.
  2. In a small bowl, combine sauce ingredients until well combined. Set aside.
  3. Heat vegetable oil or any neutral oil in a large pan on medium heat. Once oil is hot, carefully lower tofu slices away from you to prevent oil splash back. Do not overcrowd the pan. You may need to fry in two batches if you’re using a smaller pan.
  4. Fry tofu for 5-7 minutes per side or until golden brown.
  5. Once tofu is golden brown on both sides, pour in sauce in a circular motion to cover the tofu.
  6. Let sauce simmer to thicken, about 30 seconds. Then gently toss the tofu in the sauce.
  7. Garnish with green onions. Serve immediately and enjoy!
