Quick & Easy Sweet and Sticky Tofu

This Sweet and Sticky Tofu recipe transforms extra-firm tofu into crispy, golden pieces coated in a glossy, thick sauce combining soy sauce, honey, ketchup, and sesame oil. The tofu is dusted with cornstarch before pan-frying to ensure a crisp outer layer that holds the sweet and savory sauce well. The final result is tofu with a tender inside and a sticky, flavorful coating that works as a satisfying main or side dish.

Description

This recipe starts by slicing extra-firm tofu into rectangular pieces and removing excess moisture to help crispiness. Coating the tofu in a cornstarch and salt mixture creates a crisp crust when pan-fried in vegetable oil until golden on all sides. Separately, a sauce is prepared by blending soy sauce, ketchup, honey (or maple syrup), cold water, and cornstarch to thicken when heated.

After frying, the sauce is added back to the pan over low heat and thickened before coating the tofu gently. Sesame seeds are added as garnish for texture and flavor. The cooking method produces a contrast of crispy tofu exterior and a sticky, sweet-savory glaze that clings well, providing a balanced texture and taste.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 lb extra-firm tofu strained of liquids
  • ¼ cup cornstarch or potato starch
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoon soy sauce regular
  • 2 tablespoon honey or maple syrup for a vegan option
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • ¼ cup water cold
  • 2 tablespoon ketchup
  • 3 tablespoon vegetable oil or any neutral oil

Instructions

  1. Slice extra-firm tofu into long rectangular pieces, about 2-inches long and 1-inch thick. Pat them dry with a paper towel to remove as much excess moisture as possible.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together 3 tablespoon of cornstarch (reserving 1 tablespoon for later) and salt. Evenly coat tofu pieces in the cornstarch mixture ensuring no bald spots for a crispier tofu.
  3. In a small bowl, combine regular soy sauce, ketchup, honey, cold water and 1 tablespoon cornstarch until well combined. Set aside.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a large non-stick pan set on medium heat. Pan-fry tofu until crispy and golden brown on all sides, about 12-15 minutes in total.
  5. Reduce to low heat and pour in sauce. Let it thicken and then gently toss with tofu. Once each tofu piece is coated in the thickened sauce, remove and transfer to a serving plate.
  6. Garnish tofu with sesame seeds. Enjoy!
