Quick & Easy Thai Basil Spicy Fried Rice

Quick & Easy Thai Basil Spicy Fried Rice uses day-old jasmine rice stir-fried with marinated chicken breast, fresh Thai basil, chopped red chili, and garlic paste for a vibrant and aromatic dish. The rice is coated in a savory sauce made with oyster sauce, fish sauce, soy sauce, and sugar, yielding a slightly saucy and flavorful meal. Optionally garnished with a fried egg and lime, it provides a balanced combination of spicy, savory, and herbal notes.

Description

This Thai fried rice starts with thinly sliced chicken breast marinated briefly in fish sauce and soy sauce. Separately, red chili and garlic are ground into a paste to release their oils and flavor. A sauce combining oyster sauce, fish sauce, soy sauce, and sugar is prepared to coat the rice during stir-frying. Day-old jasmine rice is preferred for better texture.

Cooking involves frying the chicken partially, then adding the chili garlic paste and rice to combine flavors. The sauce is poured in to coat the rice grains, producing a slightly moist and saucy consistency. Fresh Thai basil is stirred in at the end to impart a distinctive herbal aroma and taste. The dish can be served with a fried egg and a squeeze of lime to add richness and brightness.

This fried rice stands out for its use of fresh Thai basil and a balance of salty, sweet, and spicy components. It works well as a main meal offering protein and herbs in one pan, suitable for lunch or dinner.

The recipe notes the amount of uncooked rice needed to yield three cups cooked if preparing rice ahead. Using leftover rice helps achieve the ideal texture for frying and prevents clumping.
