Recipe: Spicy Watermelon Margarita
Description
The recipe begins with removing the rind and seeds from ripe watermelon before blending it into a smooth juice, which is then strained for clarity. This juice forms the base of the margarita and provides a natural sweetness and bright fruit flavor. Fresh lime juice adds acidity to balance the sweetness, while blanco tequila lends a smooth spirit foundation.
Sliced jalapeños are included to infuse the cocktail with spicy notes, creating a warming contrast to the sweet watermelon. The cocktail is shaken with ice to chill and dilute it slightly, ensuring a balanced taste and refreshing feel. The glass rimmed with salt and chili powder enhances the flavor through added seasoning and a touch of heat, complemented visually and texturally by garnishes of jalapeño slices and watermelon chunks.
Various common household items like Mason jars or even two cups can be used to shake the cocktail if a traditional shaker is unavailable, making the recipe accessible. Sweetener such as agave nectar or honey can be added optionally, depending on personal taste.
Ingredients
- 2 cups watermelon rind removed, cubes, seedless
- ¼ cup lime juice freshly squeezed
- ¾ cup tequila blanco tequila or 100% agave solver
- 1 tablespoon sweetener optional (use agave nectar, honey)
- 2 jalapeños sliced
- 1 cup ice cubes
For Serving
- salt
- chili powder
- jalapeño sliced
- watermelon
- ice cubes
Instructions
Prep Watermelon:
- Use seedless fully ripe watermelon. To make watermelon juice, slice off the ends of watermelon, remove rind from it. Cut circle slices of watermelon and them cut into cubes. Add cubes watermelon into blender and blend into a smooth juice.
- If the watermelon has seeds don’t bother removing the seeds one by one. Blend it into juice along with seeds and then strain the juice using fine sieve strainer.
- Strain the juice through strainer to get fine clear watermelon juice.
Shake The Margarita:
- Pour watermelon juice into cocktail shaker (if you don’t have cocktail shaker, check notes below to know how to make margaritas without it). Add rest of the ingredients. Shake well for 30 seconds to 45 seconds. You will shake margaritas with ice only before sharing.
Prepping Margarita Glasses:
- Many opt for sugar coating on margarita glasses. I’m biased when it comes to margaritas. I need to have the salt rim. And this watermelon cocktail needs something little extra than plain salt. It needs the kick. After all it’s watermelon jalapenos margaritas remember?! It’s got to have the kick. So chili powder mixed with sea salt (crushed) is best way to serve this summer margarita.
Serving Margaritas:
- Pour cocktail into salt and chili powder rimmed cocktail glasses. Serve with 1 or 2 cubes of ice. A slice of jalapenos and a small cut watermelon piece.
- Serve immediately. Cheers!
Notes
- If you lack a cocktail shaker, use a Mason jar with a tight lid, a protein shaker bottle, or the two-cups method to shake the margarita.
- For seed-containing watermelon, blend seeds along with fruit and strain the juice to remove solids.
- Adjust the amount of jalapeño and sweetener to balance the spice level and sweetness to your preference.
- Use freshly squeezed lime juice for the best flavor brightness.
