Red Velvet Brownies
Description
This Red Velvet Brownies recipe blends softened unsalted butter and sugar until fluffy before incorporating red food coloring and cocoa powder to achieve its signature look and mild chocolate flavor. Eggs are added one by one to maintain emulsion and structure. Dry ingredients, including flour and salt, are folded in carefully to avoid overmixing and preserve tenderness. The batter is baked in a prepared 8x8 inch pan until the center firms up without jiggling, testing with a toothpick for just moist crumbs.
Once cooled, the brownies can be topped with a cream cheese frosting, adding a smooth, tangy contrast to the sweet, soft bars. This dessert works well sliced into squares for serving at gatherings or as an everyday treat.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup butter unsalted, softened
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 1 oz red food coloring more or less can be used as desired
- 3 tbsp cocoa powder natural or Dutch process
- 2 large egg room temperature
- 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 tsp salt
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Prepare and 8x8 inch baking pan with non-stick cooking spray. Set aside.
- In a mixing bowl beat softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy, approximately 2-3 minutes. Add in food coloring and beat until well combined. Add in cocoa powder and beat until well combined. Add in eggs, one at a time, beating until combined after each egg.
- Add in flour and salt, and mix by hand until well combined, but do not overmix. Transfer mixture to prepared baking pan.
- Bake for approximately 35-45 minutes or until center of brownie starts to set (won't jiggle when you shake the pan gently) and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with just a few moist crumbs. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely on a wire cooling rack.
- If desired, once brownies are completely cool, frost with cream cheese frosting.
Notes
- Use room temperature eggs to ensure better mixing and texture.
- Check doneness by the brownies starting to set in the center and a toothpick coming out with only a few moist crumbs.
- Applying cream cheese frosting after cooling adds a creamy tartness that complements the red velvet flavor.
