Red Velvet Donuts

Red Velvet Donuts combine cocoa powder, buttermilk, and a few drops of red food coloring to create a tender, moist batter baked in a donut pan. The donuts are finished with a smooth cream cheese glaze made from cream cheese, butter, vanilla, and confectioners' sugar for a tangy-sweet topping. The light crumb and subtle cocoa flavor balanced with the creamy glaze make these donuts a distinctive treat suitable for brunch or dessert.

Description

Red Velvet Donuts offer a moist texture thanks to the buttermilk and cocoa powder in the batter, brightened by red food coloring for that classic red velvet appearance. The batter is whisked and baked in a donut pan, resulting in a tender crumb with just a hint of chocolate and rich buttery notes. The accompanying cream cheese glaze is whipped until smooth and creamy, adding a pleasant tang that complements the sweetness of the donuts. Sprinkling leftover donut crumbs on top adds a nice textural contrast.

These donuts are ideal for serving alongside coffee or tea, offering a visually appealing and flavorful option for special breakfasts or dessert. Their individual size and baked preparation make them less greasy than fried donuts, which can appeal to those seeking a lighter option.

The glaze consistency can be adjusted by adding milk slowly, depending on humidity and sugar packing. If food coloring is omitted, the donuts bake to a dusty brownish pink hue, which looks attractive though it photographs less vibrantly. Extra batter can be used to make cupcakes, which can be crumbled as garnish for added texture.
