Red Velvet Valentine Cookies

Red Velvet Valentine Cookies are soft cocoa-tinted cookies enriched with red food coloring for a festive appearance. The dough combines cocoa powder and baking powder with flour and sugar, then incorporates an egg, milk, and butter for moisture and richness. After resting in the refrigerator, the cookie dough is shaped into balls, rolled in powdered sugar, and baked until set. These cookies have a tender texture with a subtle cocoa taste and a sweet coating from the powdered sugar, ideal for a Valentine’s treat.

Description

These Red Velvet Valentine Cookies have a tender texture resulting from the balance of flour, cocoa powder, and dairy ingredients. The dough is first chilled to help with shaping and to prevent spreading during baking, ensuring the cookies keep a soft round shape. Rolling the cookies in powdered sugar before baking adds a sweet outer layer that contrasts lightly with the red cocoa dough beneath. The addition of red food coloring provides the classic red velvet look associated with the holiday.

The baking temperature is moderately high to set the cookies in about 15 minutes without drying them out. Once done, the cookies should have a slight chew and softness inside. Their mild cocoa flavor makes them suitable for sharing or gifting, especially around Valentine’s Day or other special occasions.

Serve these cookies with milk, tea, or coffee. Chilling the dough is a key step to control the texture and shape, so plan ahead for the resting time.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 3/4 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 egg
  • 40 ml milk
  • 1/4 cup butter room temperature
  • 1 tsp red food coloring
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl: flour, sugar, cocoa and baking powder.
  2. In another bowl, mix the egg, milk and food dye with a blender or whisk.
  3. Add the mixed liquid ingredients from step 2 to the dry ingredients, plus room temperature butter. Mix everything thoroughly.
  4. Cover the finished dough with plastic food wrap and leave in the refrigerator for 2 hours.
  5. Take out the chilled dough from the refrigerator, roll small balls out of it. Then roll them in powdered sugar and put on a baking sheet.
  6. Bake in an oven preheated to 375 degrees Fahrenheit for about 15 minutes until done.

Notes

  • Chilling the dough for two hours before baking helps maintain shape and texture in the cookies.
  • Roll cookies evenly in powdered sugar to create a consistent sweet coating.
  • These cookies pair well with milk or hot beverages for a festive treat.
