Red White and Blue Rice Crispy Treats

These Red White and Blue Rice Crispy Treats use melted butter and a combination of jumbo and miniature marshmallows to bind crispy rice cereal into colorful layered bars. Food gel coloring tints portions of the mixture red and blue, while an uncolored layer forms the white middle, creating a patriotic tri-color effect. The treats deliver a chewy texture with festive appearance for celebrations.

Description

The recipe begins by melting butter and jumbo marshmallows together, then stirring in miniature marshmallows until just softened to create a sticky mixture. Rice Krispies cereal is folded in to coat all pieces evenly. The mixture is divided into three bowls, where blue and red gel food coloring are mixed into two portions, leaving one plain for the white layer.

The colored mixtures are pressed sequentially into a prepared pan, starting with blue, then white, and finally the red layer on top, making distinct stripes representing the colors red, white, and blue. The bars set firmly as they cool but remain chewy from the marshmallows. Optional decorative touches include colored chocolate melts and star-shaped sprinkles.

These treats are suitable for festive occasions and can be cut into squares for easy serving. The texture is crisp yet soft with a familiar sweet marshmallow flavor elevated by its vivid colors. Cutting through the layers reveals the tri-color layering clearly.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 8 tablespoons butter unsalted
  • 2 packages marshmallow 10 oz each, jumbo
  • 6 cups miniature marshmallows
  • 2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 box Rice Krispies cereal

Optional:

  • Food Coloring blue gel type
  • red gel food coloring
  • 5 ounces red chocolate melts
  • 5 ounces blue chocolate melts
  • 1/4 cup white chocolate chips
  • 2-3 tablespoons Sprinkles star shaped

Instructions

  1. In a large saucepan, melt the butter on low heat.
  2. Add the Jumbo marshmallows and stir until completely melted, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Stir in miniature marshmallows and remove them from heat when they are not fully melted.
  4. Add the Rice Krispies cereal and stir until well coated.

For Red, White and Blue Bars:

  1. Divide the mixture into three large bowls.
  2. Add about 6 drops of blue gel food coloring to one bowl, and using a spatula, mix it into the rice crispy treats mixture until fully combined and blue.
  3. Using a buttered spatula, press the blue rice krispy mixture into a 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan coated with cooking spray or layered with parchment paper. Layering with parchment paper is better, as it makes removal from the pan much easier.
  4. Press the uncolored bowl of rice krispy mixture on top of the blue layer.
  5. Add about six drops of red gel food coloring to the remaining bowl, and using a spatula, mix into the rice crispy treats mixture until thoroughly combined and red if the mixture starts to harden and is hard to work with, microwave for 1-2 minutes.
  6. Press the red bowl of rice krispy mixture on top of the white layer.
  7. Melt the red and blue candy melts in separate bowls per package instructions.
  8. Drizzle on top of the rice Krispy treats. Top with white chocolate chips and start sprinkles.
  9. Cool. Cut into 2-inch squares and serve.
