Reindeer Chow

Reindeer Chow is a hearty snack mix combining Chex cereal, pretzels, and festive M&M's coated in a warm, smooth mixture of melted chocolate, peanut butter, butter, and vanilla. Coated with confectioners’ sugar, it offers a sweet and salty mix with crunchy texture and colorful holiday sprinkles. This treat is ideal for holiday gatherings or casual snacking with a festive twist.

Description

Reindeer Chow blends semi-sweet chocolate chips, creamy peanut butter, and unsalted butter melted together until smooth and infused with vanilla and salt. This warm mixture is poured over a mix of Chex cereal and pretzel twists, coating each piece evenly. Confectioners’ sugar is then stirred in to add a sweet dusting, before folding in additional pretzels, holiday-themed M&M's, and sprinkles for texture and festive color.

The snack offers a crunchy, sweet, and slightly salty experience with varied textures from the chewy chocolate-peanut butter coating to the crisp cereal and pretzels. Its festive color scheme suits holiday celebrations or parties. It can be served immediately and enjoyed as a handheld treat.

Because of its large quantity, preparing in a very large bowl or transferring to a large resealable bag after adding confectioners’ sugar aids mixing. The combination can be stored airtight at room temperature for up to one month or refrigerated for at least two months, maintaining texture and flavor.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 cup chocolate chips semi-sweet
  • cup peanut butter creamy
  • ¼ cup butter unsalted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 12.8 ounces Chocolate Chex Cereal (other varieties of Chex may be substituted if necessary)
  • 4 cups pretzel twists divided, small
  • 2 cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 1 pound M&Ms holiday variety
  • 1 cup holiday sprinkles or to taste

Instructions

  1. To a medium saucepan, add the chocolate chips, peanut butter, butter, and heat over medium-low heat to melt, stir very frequently until smooth and combined.
  2. Remove from the heat, add the vanilla salt, and stir to combine; set aside.
  3. To a very large bowl, add the Chex, 1 cup pretzels, pour the chocolate-peanut butter mixture over the top, and stir very well to combine.
  4. Add the confectioners’ sugar and stir to combine. At this point I recommend transferring everything into a jumbo (2.5-gallon) plastic storage bag. You can shake the sugar around easier, more effectively, and unless you have a ginormous bowl, it will become hard to accommodate the remaining ingredients.
  5. Add the remaining pretzels, M&M's, sprinkles, and shake or stir to combine. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Use the largest mixing bowl available to accommodate all ingredients comfortably during preparation.
  • After adding confectioners’ sugar, transfer mixture to a large (2.5-gallon) resealable plastic bag for easier mixing of remaining ingredients.
  • Substitute holiday sprinkles and M&Ms with seasonally appropriate colors if preparing for occasions other than Christmas.
  • Store Reindeer Chow in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 month or refrigerate up to 2 months to retain freshness.
