Description
This cocktail starts by rimming the glass with lime juice and coarse salt or Tajin for a seasoned edge. The main mix consists of reposado tequila blended with grapefruit and lime juices, along with agave syrup to sweeten if desired. Shaking the ingredients with ice chills and dilutes the blend slightly. After straining into ice-filled glasses, club soda adds effervescence and lightens the drink.
The Paloma's flavor is a refreshing balance of tart citrus and smooth tequila notes, enhanced by the seasoned rim and fresh garnishes of grapefruit and lime slices. The reposado tequila imparts subtle wood and vanilla tones making it more complex than blanco tequila versions.
Besides individual cocktails, this recipe can be scaled up by preparing the mix (excluding club soda) ahead of time in a pitcher. Adding club soda and garnish when serving preserves the drink's fizziness and freshness.
Ingredients
- coarse salt or Tajin
- 4 oz reposado tequila
- 1 cup grapefruit juice or bottled, fresh
- 1 lime juiced
- 1 oz agave nectar optional
- club soda
- grapefruit for garnish, wedges
- lime for garnish, wedges
Instructions
- Rub a wedge of lime around the rim of the glass and the dip the outside of the rim of the glass in coarse salt or Tajin.
- To a cocktail shaker add the tequila, grapefruit juice, and lime juice. If you like a sweet paloma feel free to add agave nectar.
- Fill cocktail shaker with ice. Shake well; strain into two ice-filled rocks glasses. Top with club soda. Garnish with grapefruit and lime slices.
Notes
- Either reposado tequila or mezcal can be used for authentic variations with slightly different smoky notes.
- For larger gatherings, mix all ingredients except club soda ahead in a pitcher, then add club soda and garnish when serving.
