Restaurant Style Pita Bread

A super easy homemade pita bread recipe, this thick, fluffy and pillowy pita bread is ideal for scooping up hummus, creating pita wraps or spreading with creamy tzatziki sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 1 cup lukewarm water
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 ¾ cups flour

Instructions

  1. Using a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the yeast, sugar, and warm water until yeast is dissolved. Let proof, about 20 minutes. Stir in the salt and oil.
  2. Place the yeast liquid mixture in a stand mixer bowl with the dough hook attachment. Turn the mixer on low and gradually add flour, mixing until the dough becomes stiff. If you need a bit more flour, continue adding 2 tablespoons at a time until the dough is smooth and comes away from the sides of the bowl.
  3. Lightly oil a large bowl then remove the dough from the stand mixer and place in the bowl. Toss the ball of dough once to coat in the oil before covering with a towel. Let rest for one hour or until the dough doubles in size.
  4. On a floured surface, cut the dough in to eight equal pieces then carefully roll each one in to a ball. Sprinkle a little flour on each ball then, using a rolling pin, roll in to a flat circle.
  5. Heat a griddle over medium-high heat then lightly oil with olive oil. Add the pita rounds to the griddle then heat for 2-3 minutes per side until it begins to bubble and slightly brown. Serve pita warm.

Notes

  • Don’t worry about it being perfectly round, just try to make it the same level of thickness throughout. The thinner, the better in my book.

  • Keep pita bread in an air-tight plastic bag to ensure freshness.
