Rice Krispie Treats (5-Minute Microwave Recipe)
Description
This quick microwave version of Rice Krispie Treats begins by melting butter and mini marshmallows together until just combined. The melted mixture is then folded into crispy rice cereal to coat it evenly. Pressing the mixture into a greased dish and allowing it to cool produces firm bars with a tender yet chewy consistency.
The treat’s texture balances between the softness of melted marshmallow and the crunch of the rice cereal. The recipe uses minimal ingredients and requires only a few minutes, making it suitable for quick preparation. Adjusting the microwave time carefully ensures the marshmallow mixture melts without burning and mixes well with the cereal.
The treats may be served immediately but develop better texture when cooled to room temperature. Using a large microwave-safe bowl simplifies mixing. If a large bowl is unavailable, melt marshmallows separately and combine afterward.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup butter if using unsalted butter, add a dash of salt to the recipe, salted
- 16 ounces mini marshmallows
- 9 cups crispy rice cereal (i.e. Rice Krispies Cereal)
Instructions
- Place butter and marshmallows in a LARGE microwave-safe bowl.
- Microwave on high for 1 minute. Remove bowl from microwave and stir. Return bowl to microwave and microwave another 30 seconds. Stir again until marshmallows and butter are completely melted together. You only want it JUST melted.
- Fold in rice cereal until well combined.
- Place mixture in a greased 9x13 dish and press down evenly (spray a little cooking spray on your hands to prevent sticking). Allow to cool before serving.
Notes
- Use a large microwave-safe bowl to melt butter and marshmallows evenly and allow easy stirring.
- If a large bowl isn’t available, melt butter and marshmallows in a smaller bowl, then combine with cereal in a larger container.
- Press mixture evenly into a greased dish, using lightly greased hands or spray to prevent sticking.
- Though treats can be served right away, allowing them to cool to room temperature improves their texture.
