Rich Chocolate Frosting
Description
The recipe starts by melting butter gently and whisking in cocoa powder to create a chocolate base. After cooling, this base is combined with powdered sugar and milk in a stand mixer, integrating the ingredients gradually for smoothness. Vanilla extract added last gives an aromatic depth. Adjusting milk quantity allows control over frosting consistency, from thick and spreadable to slightly thinner for piping.
This frosting layers well over cakes or cupcakes, providing a rich chocolate taste without overpowering the dessert. It is suited for any baked treat requiring a classic chocolate topping, and can be modified slightly in sweetness or thickness as needed.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups butter unsalted
- 1 cup cocoa powder unsweetened
- 6 cups powdered sugar
- 2/3 cups milk
- 1 tablespoon vanilla
Instructions
- Melt the butter in a large saucepan and whisk in the cocoa powder then remove from the heat and let cool.
- Add the cooled chocolate mix to your stand mixer and whip on medium speed adding the powdered sugar and milk, alternating them 1/3 at a time and finally add the vanilla in last.
- If the frosting is too thick, add a tablespoon of milk until it has reached desired consistency.
