Rolled Sugar Cookies

These Rolled Sugar Cookies are classic buttery cut-outs featuring a chilled dough that holds its shape well during baking. They are soft yet firm enough to decorate with a smooth, shiny almond-flavored frosting that can be colored as desired for festive designs.

Description

The cookie dough is made by creaming softened butter and sugar, then incorporating eggs, vanilla, flour, baking powder, and salt. Chilling the dough for at least an hour prevents spreading and improves texture. Rolled to a quarter to half inch thickness, the dough is cut into shapes and baked briefly at a high temperature until edges set.

The accompanying frosting combines powdered sugar, milk, corn syrup, and almond extract, creating a glossy, slightly sweet icing perfect for detailed decoration. The corn syrup adds shine and smoothness, while almond extract gives a subtle flavor enhancement. Additional corn syrup can be added to thin the icing, and food coloring may be mixed in to customize the appearance.

This recipe suits holiday baking or any occasion needing decorative treat options, and the cookies store well when fully iced and cooled.
