Saffron Rice

Saffron Rice highlights basmati grains infused with fragrant saffron threads steeped in hot water, combined with sautéed onions and butter. This method produces rice with a delicate yellow color and subtle floral flavor from the saffron. The dish is seasoned with salt and black pepper, steamed to tender perfection, and garnished with chopped parsley for a fresh finish.

Description

The Saffron Rice recipe starts by steeping saffron threads in hot water, extracting their color and aroma. Basmati rice is rinsed thoroughly to remove excess starch and then cooked with butter and diced onions sautéed until soft. The saffron infusion and sautéed onions give the rice a light golden hue and a distinctive, aromatic flavor. Simmered covered on low heat with water, the rice cooks evenly, absorbing the saffron and seasoning until tender.

Fluffing the rice after resting allows the grains to separate, enhancing texture. The finished dish pairs well as a side for various main courses where a subtle saffron scent complements but does not overwhelm. Fresh chopped parsley on top adds color and a hint of herbal brightness to the final presentation.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 teaspoon saffron threads
  • ¼ cup water hot
  • 2 cups basmati rice
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 onion diced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 3 cups water
  • parsley chopped

Instructions

  1. Place the saffron threads in hot water in a small bowl and allow the saffron to steep until golden in color, 10-15 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, rinse the rice with cold water until the water runs clear. Drain well and set aside.
  3. In a medium pot, melt the butter on medium-high heat. Add the onions and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Transfer the rinsed rice and the steeped saffron with the hot water over the cooked onions. Season with salt and pepper, and stir to combine until the rice mixture looks yellow.
  4. Add the water and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover with a tight-fitting lid and cook for 15 minutes.
  5. When the time is up, remove from the heat and allow the rice to steam for 10 minutes. Then uncover and fluff with a fork.
  6. Serve warm with fresh parsley, if desired.
