Salmon Teriyaki

Salmon Teriyaki features pan-seared salmon fillets glazed with a homemade teriyaki sauce made from soy sauce, brown sugar, garlic, ginger, honey, and toasted sesame oil. The sauce is thickened to a glossy consistency, coating the salmon along with toasted sesame seeds and green onions, providing a balance of sweet and savory flavors with aromatic notes.

Description

This recipe prepares salmon teriyaki by first creating a teriyaki sauce from soy sauce, water, brown sugar, garlic, ginger, honey, and sesame oil, which is cooked and thickened with cornstarch to achieve a glaze-like thickness. Salmon fillets are seasoned with salt and pepper, then seared skin-side up to develop a golden crust before flipping to finish cooking through.

The thickened sauce is poured over the cooked salmon to coat it evenly, and the addition of sesame seeds and sliced green onions adds texture and a subtle nutty flavor. The balance of sweet, salty, and savory elements characterizes the teriyaki profile, complementing the natural richness of the salmon.

This dish can be enjoyed with steamed rice or vegetables to complement its bold sauce and tender fish texture, making it both flavorful and filling.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 salmon approximately 4 ounces each, fillets
  • For the teriyaki sauce:
  • salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • black pepper to taste
  • cooking spray
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds
  • 1 teaspoon garlic minced
  • 2 tablespoons green onion sliced
  • 1 teaspoon ginger minced
  • 2 teaspoons honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil toasted
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch

Instructions

  1. For the teriyaki sauce: Place the soy sauce, water, brown sugar, garlic, ginger, honey and sesame oil in a small pot over medium high heat. Stir until sugar is dissolved, about 3 minutes. Turn up heat to high and bring to a boil.
  2. Mix the cornstarch with 1 tablespoon of cold water until dissolved. Add the cornstarch mixture to the sauce and boil for 1-2 minutes or until sauce has thickened. Set sauce aside.
  3. Heat the oil in a large pan over high heat. Season the salmon fillets with salt and pepper to taste. Place the salmon, skin side up in the pan and sear until a golden brown crust forms, about 5 minutes. Turn the salmon and cook for approximately 5 minutes on the other side, or until cooked through.
  4. Pour the teriyaki sauce over the salmon. Add the sesame seeds and green onions and serve.
