Salted Caramel Apple Crumb Bars

Salted Caramel Apple Crumb Bars combine tender diced apples with warm spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, layered between a crumbly buttery crust and topping. The addition of rich salted caramel sauce drizzled over the fruit filling adds a sweet, slightly salty contrast that complements the tart apples. Baked until golden, these bars offer a satisfying mix of soft fruit and crisp crumb textures, suitable for dessert or an indulgent snack.

Description

Salted Caramel Apple Crumb Bars feature a generous filling of diced Granny Smith apples tossed with lemon juice and a blend of flour, cornstarch, sugar, and warm spices including cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. This mixture is sandwiched between a crumbly dough made from all-purpose flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and cold butter, with an egg and vanilla binding the crust and topping. The salted caramel sauce layered over the apples provides a rich, buttery sweetness balanced with saltiness. Once baked at 375°F for about 45 minutes, the bars develop a golden top and a tender, flavorful interior.

The bars are ideal for serving on their own or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and extra salted caramel sauce. Their texture combines the soft baked apples and gooey caramel with the crispy, crumbly crust. This recipe makes a classic dessert bar well-suited to fall or anytime you want a comforting sweet treat with fruit and caramel.

Store leftover bars in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. For longer storage, these bars can be frozen for up to three months, wrapped tightly to preserve freshness. Reheat gently before serving to restore softness.

Ingredients

Servings

For the Filling:

  • 5 cups apple I used Granny Smith, peeled and diced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice fresh
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 3/4 cup caramel sauce can use store bought, salted

For the Crust & Topping:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 cup butter cut into small pieces, cold unsalted
  • 1 egg lightly beaten
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

For Serving:

  • vanilla ice cream optional, extra
  • salted caramel sauce optional, extra

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Spray a 9×13-inch baking pan with cooking spray and set aside.
  2. For the apple filling- place the diced apples in a large bowl and sprinkle with lemon juice. Mix gently. In a separate bowl whisk together flour, cornstarch, sugar, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ground all-spice. Pour over the apples and carefully combine. Set aside.
  3. For the dough-in a large bowl whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon. Cut in the butter with a pastry blender or by using your hands, until butter is mixed in, but you still have small chunks of butter. Mix the egg and vanilla together. Add into the flour and butter mixture and combine. The dough will be crumbly. Pat half of the dough into the prepared pan.
  4. Spread the apple mixture evenly over the bottom crust. Drizzle the salted caramel sauce over the apple filling. Crumble the remaining dough over the apple caramel layer and pat gently.
  5. Bake for 45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown. Cool completely on a wire rack. Cut into squares. You can serve the bars with vanilla ice cream and extra salted caramel sauce, if desired.

Notes
