Salted Caramel Blondies
Description
This recipe uses melted butter cooked briefly to develop a nutty flavor before mixing it with brown and white sugar until glossy. Once cooled, vanilla extract and eggs are stirred in one at a time, followed by dry ingredients—flour, baking powder, and salt—to create a smooth batter. The batter is poured into a parchment-lined 8x8 or 9x9 pan.
Soft caramel is drizzled over the batter and gently swirled with a knife to create a marbled effect before baking at 350°F for about 20-24 minutes. The blondies bake until the surface is shiny with slight cracking, indicating a tender, chewy center and set edges. After cooling, additional caramel and sea salt flakes can be added to enhance the sweet and salty contrast.
The combination of rich butter, sugars, and caramel produces a dense yet chewy texture typical of blondies. Sea salt flakes add a pop of saltiness that complements the caramel’s sweetness. These bars work well as a dessert or snack.
Ingredients
- 12 Tablespoons butter (1 1/2 sticks)
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 large egg
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 5 ounces caramel about 2/3 cup plus more for top after baking, if so desired
- sea salt flakes
Instructions
- Heat oven to 350 degrees. In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. As it starts to heat up, swirl the pan around often. Once it melts, let it continue to cook for two minutes.
- Remove from heat and add brown sugar and sugar. Stir it for 1-2 minutes until the mixture is nice and glossy and all of the sugars are dissolved into the butter.
- Let cool. It can be cooled at room temperature for about 15 minutes or can be put into the refrigerator for about 10 minutes. Add vanilla and then eggs one at a time, stirring after each addition.
- Stir in flour, baking powder, and salt. Optional: Line a 8 x 8 or 9 x 9 baking pan with parchment paper. Pour batter into the pan of choice, smoothing the top with a spatula.
- Drizzle the caramel all over the top of the batter. With a knife, swirl the caramel over the top.
- Bake until the top is shiny and slightly cracked approximately 20-24 minutes. Let cool before cutting into bars. Drizzle with more caramel and sea salt flakes, if so desired.
Notes
- Use thick, high-quality caramel for better flavor and consistency in the blondies.
