Saltine Cracker Toffee

Report
Saltine Cracker Toffee features a base layer of salty crackers topped with a buttery brown sugar toffee, melted chocolate, and optional chopped pecans. The combination delivers a contrast between salty and sweet, with a crisp texture from the crackers and a rich, caramelized topping. This treat is both crunchy and sticky, ideal for holiday cookie exchanges or making in large batches.

Description

This recipe arranges saltine crackers side-by-side in a foil-lined, greased pan forming a sturdy, salty base layer. A sauce of melted butter and packed brown sugar is cooked briefly to a boil and poured evenly over the crackers, where it caramelizes during a short oven bake. After toffee bubbling completes, chocolate chips are sprinkled over the hot toffee and spread into a smooth layer as they melt. Optionally, chopped pecans are scattered on top to add texture and nutty flavor.

The toffee hardens after refrigeration, bonding the crackers and chocolate into a rich confection that breaks into uneven pieces. The sweet, buttery toffee contrasts the saltiness of the crackers, creating a balanced flavor profile. The chocolate adds a smooth, creamy layer above the crunchy base.

This easy-to-make treat is well-suited for making large quantities, particularly at holidays for gifts or exchanges. It requires minimal ingredients and steps but delivers distinct texture contrasts and a rich, sweet-savory flavor combination.

Making sure the toffee mixture boils for the full 3 minutes avoids undercooked toffee. Cooling in the refrigerator helps the chocolate set firmly and facilitates breaking into pieces.

  • Ensure the butter and sugar mixture boils thoroughly for proper toffee texture.
  • Cooling in the refrigerator is essential to harden the chocolate and toffee layers, making it easy to break into pieces.
