Saltine Cracker Toffee

Saltine Cracker Toffee is a sweet and crunchy treat featuring a salted cracker base topped with a buttery brown sugar toffee layer and melted semi-sweet chocolate. The contrast between the salty crackers and sweet toffee, combined with optional candy toppings or nuts, creates a rich, textured candy bar. Baking briefly allows the toffee to set while melting the chocolate, resulting in a perfect combination of crisp, chewy, and smooth layers.

Description

This Saltine Cracker Toffee starts with laying salted crackers in a baking sheet as a sturdy base. A mixture of brown sugar and butter is boiled to create a caramelized toffee, which is immediately poured over the crackers spreading into an even layer. Baking for a few minutes completes the toffee cooking process and sets the base.

Semi-sweet chocolate chips are sprinkled on top of the hot toffee and allowed to melt, then spread smoothly over the surface. Additional toppings such as sprinkles, chopped nuts, or candy can be added while the chocolate is warm, enhancing flavor and texture. Cooling fully in layers of refrigerator and freezer reduces setting time and firms the toffee and chocolate layers.

The final candy offers a satisfying combination of salty, sweet, buttery, and chocolate flavors with crunchy and creamy textures. It can be broken into pieces and stored chilled for snacking or gifting.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 35 pieces saltine crackers salted, you need about 35-40 crackers for one batch to fill the pan
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup butter salted
  • 1 ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups chocolate chips semi-sweet
  • Toppings (optional) sprinkles, chocolate candies (like M&Ms), peanut butter chips, etc.

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°. Line a 10x15 rimmed baking sheet with aluminum foil and spray generously with spray cooking oil or line with parchment paper.
  2. Lay crackers salted side down in a single layer on the baking sheet.
  3. Place a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Add brown sugar and butter and bring to a boil. Boil for 3 minutes while stirring continuously until the mixture is lighter in color and bubbling. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla immediately into the brown sugar mixture.
  4. Pour toffee over crackers, spreading as needed to cover crackers in an even layer. Bake toffee crackers for 5 minutes then remove from the oven and turn the heat on the oven off.
  5. Sprinkle chocolate chips over the toffee layer and return to the warm but not on oven for 1 minute. Remove from the oven and spread melted chips over the toffee.
  6. Immediately sprinkle chopped nuts, sprinkles or any additional toppings you choose over the top of the chocolate.
  7. Let the toffee cool for 30 minutes on the counter, then chill in the refrigerator for 2 hours or until completely cool and set.
  8. Using the crackers as a guide, cut with a sharp knife into 35 pieces. You can also break it up into random-sized pieces like it is a saltine toffee bark. Then serve and enjoy!

Notes

  • Cool the toffee on the counter for 30 minutes, then chill in the refrigerator for another 30 minutes before transferring to the freezer for 30 minutes to speed up setting.
  • You can customize toppings by adding chopped nuts, sprinkles, or candies to the chocolate while it is still warm for added texture and flavor.
