Sara Lee Pound Cake

Sara Lee Pound Cake is a traditional loaf cake blending butter, sugar, eggs, and cake flour with subtle flavorings like nutmeg, lemon juice, and vanilla. It bakes to a tender crumb with a gentle spice note, balanced moisture from powdered milk and corn syrup, and a loaf shape that serves well at gatherings or casual desserts. Its nearly underbaked finish keeps it moist and slightly delicate.

Description

Sara Lee Pound Cake combines butter, sugar, eggs, cake flour, powdered milk, and corn syrup as its main ingredients. The addition of lemon juice, nutmeg, mace, salt, and vanilla build layers of mild aromatic flavor. The batter is creamed until light and fluffy before baking in a 9x5-inch loaf pan.

Baking at 325°F allows gentle cooking for about 45 minutes. The goal is to pull the cake out slightly before fully done to retain moistness. Doneness is checked by inserting a toothpick which should come out clean but the cake may be tender. The pound cake texture is expected to be rich but soft with a fine crumb, typical of this type of classic recipe.

This pound cake is suitable for serving with coffee or tea and can be enjoyed plain or with simple accompaniments like fruit or cream. Its storage is straightforward, best kept wrapped to maintain freshness for a few days.

  • 4 ounces butter unsalted
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 3 egg
  • 1 cup cake flour
  • 2 tablespoons  powdered milk dry
  • 1 tablespoon corn syrup
  • 1 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon mace optional

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
  2. Allow butter to reach room temperature if you can try to use unsalted butter. Cream sugar and butter together until light and fluffy.
  3. Add eggs one at a time and mix well. Add in flour, powdered milk, baking powder, and corn syrup. Beat each in well.
  4. Add the juice of half a lemon, salt, vanilla, nutmeg, and mace. Make sure everything is well blended, and pour into a prepared loaf pan 9" x 5" x 2 1/2.
  5. Bake at 325 degrees for 45 minutes, checking for doneness by inserting a toothpick and seeing if it comes out clean. You almost want to underbake this.
