Sardinhas assadas (Barbecued Sardines)

Sardinhas assadas are classic charcoal grilled sardines that is traditional food in Portugal. They are very popular during summer festival.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 lb sardines , gutted
  • kosher salt
  • 2 lemon plural
  • neutral cooking oil to grease the barbecue grill, generic cooking oil

Instructions

  1. Rinse the sardines thoroughly.
  2. At the bottom of a large dish, place a bed of kosher salt.
  3. Place the sardines on top and cover them with the kosher salt. Marinate for 1 hour.
  4. Grease the barbecue grill to prevent sardines sticking. Light the barbecue.
  5. Rinse the sardines and gently pat them dry them with paper towels.
  6. Place the sardines on the barbecue, 2 inches (5cm) away from the embers.
  7. Grill on both sides.
  8. Enjoy the hot sardines drizzled with lemon juice and served with French fries.
